Piwi-like protein 1 is also known as PIWIL1 (Swiss Prot: Q96J94). It may be component of some RISC (RNA-induced silencing) complexes, which plays a role in spermatogenesis and in germ cell production, proliferation, and maintenance. RISC complexes mediate RNA cleavage and translational silencing. Overexpression may cause malignant germline development. PIWIL1 may be associated with proliferating activity of cancer cells. When suppressed, it can inhibit the growth of gastric cancer cells and induce cell cycle arrest in G2/M phase. It also inhibits endoribonuclease DICER1 activity.
